Adam controls psychic yo-yo’s Morris rides around in a levitating wheelchair and has a knack for music Lizzie commands water and ice Sam can communicate (horrifyingly) with animals and Norma wields psychic flames. This eclectic group of psychic oddballs hits so many varied notes that it makes the whole group sing. Although there are plenty of returning faces from the previous game, most of the cast is full of new characters, such as the group of interns Raz finds himself training with. The Psychonauts universe is home to some of the most hilarious and charming characters I’ve ever encountered in a video game, which is perfect since you spend so much time with them. The first Psychonauts game was defined by its sense of humor and creativity, with the sequel proving that wasn’t just a fluke. Determined to prove his worth as a fully-fledged Psychonaut, Raz quickly gets caught up in a string of events that puts him in way over his head with ties to the founding of the Psychonauts and the Aquato family legacy. Arriving at the Psychonauts headquarters for the first time after an impromptu first mission (the VR game “Rhombus of Ruin” covers these events), Raz learns that his addition to the Psychonauts might have been premature and that he has to start at the bottom of the food chain as an intern. The main character, Razputin Aquato (Raz for short), is only 10 years old, but his prowess at mental manipulation and his role in saving Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp has earned him a spot on the prestigious team of psychic defenders know as the Psychonauts. Psychonauts 2 picks up a mere three days after the events of the first game. While watching the recap video is recommended, the story in Psychonauts 2 was designed to be a standalone tale that doesn’t require extensive knowledge of the previous game to follow, although that knowledge does make for a richer experience. However, I still highly recommend playing the first Psychonauts since it’s such a unique and charming game. This video does a terrific job of explaining the events from both the first game and the shorter VR title “Rhombus of Ruin”, providing you with some basic knowledge of this universe. Psychonauts 2 comes with a helpful recap video designed to help newcomers get caught up with the story, but it’s also worth watching as a refresher for returning fans. If this is your first time jumping into the mental world of Psychonauts, have no fear. Now, after 16 years and a short VR spin-off, Psychonauts is back with a sequel that dares to outdo every genius idea presented in its first outing, and let me tell you… this is one of 2021’s strongest contenders for Game of the Year. However, as the years went by and word of mouth travelled, Psychonauts took on a “cult classic” legacy and a dedicated fanbase started to grow. The highly imaginative tale of a young boy attending a psychic summer camp was praised as a fresh, entertaining, and genuinely funny experience, but the enthusiasm sadly didn’t carry over to sales, making Psychonauts a flop. Available On: PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|Sĭespite releasing to universal acclaim on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2005, Psychonauts was a commercial failure.
